A couple months back I saw a note about a real cheap memory upgrade board
that was advertized in Current Notes. It cost about $45. Has anyone tried
it? I would like any information I can get.
Thanks,

Well, the UNIX was rather interesting. I say I WAS AGHAST Atari was
there in such STAFF NUMBERS...
When I seen the Unix, I thought another machine was running it! But,
it appears that they do have a beta version with X, along with Atari's
own version of a widget toolset, for user interface construction and
rapid prototyping.
It looked complete, but it was a BIT slow. I don't think a TT is something
you would want to run X on for serious applications...
Now if someone made an accelerator, with a 40Mhz, or 50Mhz 030
it would probably be fine. (MR. SMALL incidentally couldn't make it...
rumor has it he had a cold...flu bug. I hope your feeling better Dave.)
They also were showing a VME card for ethernet..which would cost $350.00
for developers I think.
They also were showing a 24 bit color VME card, which looked promising
for about $799.00 for TT/MEga STE's.
All these cards were interesting, but can YOU BUY THEM. ??? Atari says
YES, I say NO.
I bought Multi-GEM 1.02 which seemed to have matured a little bit since
the DOGGY 1.0 version that I had seen. Unfortuneately, my software
doesn't work with MultiGEM, which made me sort of depressed as its just
yet another environment to support...and it looks like its HERE TO STAY.
(I also have to add GEM calls to my nice CLEAN TOS code...ICKY UCKY OOOO.)
(Kiss portability GOOD BYE...Smooch)
Many people bought many copies of this product...it went like HOT CAKES,
and the upgrade policy is second to NONE. But I suppose thats because
its a European Company...(Remik Enterprises). I am always impressed
with German/UK Software developers. Hard Working folks they ARE.
As soon as I DISECT Multi GEM, I'll give a more technical review of the
product and whether or not in my opinion we should bother with it.
And perhaps some things too look out for in supporting TWO Multitasking
Pre-emptive systems for the ST...Get out your Turbo Debuggers people...
(ie MiNT better alternative...????)
I was not impressed with what Atari had to say, its simply more BS to me,
but I was impressed about how they seemed to have EVERYONE there of importance
and, they seem to have gotten a public image face lift..since the NIel
Harris days. I found that interesting.
The Notebook. What can I say about it? Its interesting, the display
is nice, not great but nice. The form factor is very good. Would I buy
one though? Probably not, its neato. But the business software for
the ST is very poor, so I would recommend a DOS notebook. Who would
use something like this? It would be GREAT for students...do your CS
homework ANYWHERE you want (Turbo C). It may be good for limited use as
a word processor. I didn't get a chance, but IT MIGHT be a good MAC
portable with a redesigned GCR specifically for it. I might buy one
if I could use it for Mac portability. (Then of course you open up
the business oportunities and some serious possibilities...)
Its a great What if...product though.
Let me see, who else was there? Gosh TONS of Lynx games comming out people.
I almost bought a Lynx, the new one with sound. Appearently, the old Lynx
is better designed, structurally...but not as efficient with power as the
new Lynx's, with stereo sound. So you should get a little extra more
battery life out of your latest model Lynx...and of course the newer Lynx's
have the ability for you power down the backlighting, to save energy.
Too many games to list comming out, but everyone WON'T be disappointed though.
Atari's game machine. Its suppose to be 32-64 bit game system. Probably
cost between $200.00-$275.00, and is suppose to set the video game
industry on ear....look for it around April, or March next year.
Mmmmm....well, we shall see...or maybe we won't!
What was really fascinating was a new word processing program, that was
clearly a new paradigm shift completely in how we should edit and look at
text on the screen. It was very fast too. You could grab words and
whole blocks of text and simply interactively, move them two any position
you liked....I am at work, and don't have the flyer handy, but if your
interested write me and I will fill you in.
Defineately gets the most innovative award for new product.
No 030 vendors at the show. This was a BIG disappointment. Obviously the
hardware upgrade market, is very limiting on the ST..only two vendors to
choose from for 32 bit processor upgrades, and none of them offer a 040
alternative...thats really gonna hurt Atari UNIX.
Yours truly won an XE Game system as a door prize. I wasn't overjoyed,
mainly because they were selling them in DROVES for $25 bucks a package.
I think the factory that made those probably exploded somewhere and
thats why they have some many of them to sell so cheaply..and give away.
Well, all in all a rather interesting show. Many more people were there.
Lots of great deals on computer equipment at the swap floor, and vendors
were selling tons of software for $5-$2000 range...I think most of them
were laughing all the way to the bank. Best Electronics was there with
lots of nice deals...(Could buy a replacement chip though for my Mega STE's
VIDEO and sound problems though...)...
Atari was there in full force, they supported vendors probably for the
first time with any kind of machine requirements they needed.
VERY UNUSUAL show. I enjoyed it very much.
Look forward to the next one!

I have developed under a half dozen different UNIX machines in the lasst ten
years. All the way back to the original AT&T 3B2 when I worked at Bell Labs.
I have to wonder just how serious a UNIX workstation is if it is from Atari.
First, the TT is a bit underpowered seeing as how it is basically just
a 16MHz 68030. Oh I know the CPU is running at 32MHz but the I/O buss
is still 16MHz and UNIX is VERY I/O intensive (can you say disk swapping?).
Also, their UNIX X Windows pack requires the $1,000 monochrome monitor
as the native TT color resolutions aren't high enough to support decent
X Windows.
And Atari is shipping the GNU compilers, which while excellent are NOT
commerically supported compilers. Try getting technical support if the
compiler breaks and you don't have access to USENET. Do you want to spend
your precious development time debugging your development tools or
writing your project? Thats why you need professional, commerically
supported compilers and debuggers.
But hay, pay out the $6 to $8 grand that an Atari Sys V development
system would cost. I would rather pay the same bucks and buy a Mac IIFX
with Apple's A/UX. At least I know Apple will be around for awhile!!

Think of other possible Unix computers at the same price, and then you
would not find the TT underpowered. I would never give my TT away for
a 386 or 486 clone or a low cost Mac. Macs with the same performance are
three times as expensive.

I don't know where you can buy a IIfx for the same price as an ASV
development system. Maybe there are some differences between Germany and
the USA, but out here the IIfx costs twice as much. But keep your
hands off A/UX, Version 2.x is simply unbearable, and the 3.0 version
I saw a few days ago crashed as often as System 7 :-)
I wouldn't buy expensive computers like that if their OS is that buggy.
Get ASV, if you can - me, I can't!

BinkleyTerm is a front end mailer used with any BBS system to access networks
based on FidoNet technology. It is widely used on both IBM and Atari systems,
is PD and is currently undergoing a major upgrade. The current version for the
IBM is 2.50 and the current version for the Atari is 2.41-beta15. Once the
Atari version is completed it will be version 3.00. Both the IBM and Atari
versions are DLable @ cyberSecT BBS (509)235-4875 and include over 200 pages
of documentation. You may also FREQ them at 1:346/18.0 if you have access to

No! Since then they would overflow a 720k floppy:

replace some parts of the original distribution.

Yes, there is one!
I just had the same idea some days ago - and a part of the source text
(assembler / c) is ready already. And - of course - this program (title for
now: PRAX) will be (not public domain but) free.
But there is a problem I encountered: I haven't found yet a way of handling the
booted accessories (cause they are no real MiNT processes (I just do not know
what they are from MiNT's point of view; they from time to time are called by
AES which is called by the active process - so they always seem to be part of
the active process). But I hope this will be solved soon (the simplest but also
worst solution is to forbid accessories; another idea is to start a background
process that cares for them). (By the way: Does anybody know in which cases AES
switches from the current AES-process to another one? Only if a process calles
one of the evnt_-routines?)
However - is there anyboudy out there wanting to write a vt52 emulator shell
(see the lines marked with [ !! ] above) ? It should be re-entrant (is that
right spelled?) so that we could launch several processes using it with only
one code copy kept in memory.
Please -- you may ask me all questions concerning this project but none
concerning the date of releasing the first distribution and none concerning my
use of the English language (I'm just learning it...).
That's all for today. Good bye.

It also works without cooling the WD1772 down, but it must be a chip with the
code WD 1772 02-02 others don't work properly, after you got this, what now?
You should change the clock of the WD to 16Mhz when using a HD-Disk (of course
you need a HD-Floppy, I'd prefer the TEAC FD235HF). Then You need a logic to
change between 16 and 8 Mhz Clock depending on the state of the floppies
HD-OUT-Signal. If You're interested in more a must look up the circuit at home

Yes, and just whose fault is it that ALL of these books are both
discontinued, out of print (at least here in the USA) AND hopelessly
out of date anyway?
Does Atari Corp mean anything?
But look at how Apple Corp supports their users. I just saw another
volume of the "Inside The Macintosh" series at my local bookstore the
other day. A massive thing probably over 1,000. That is more then ALL
of those out of print ST books combined. And it is just ONE volume in
the Mac series.
Now if Atari Corp would have released programmers/techincal notes like
Apple Corp does now years ago maybe the ST wouldn't be so dead here
in the USA.
I get a big laugh out of the folks who buy the German Turbo C compiler,
with its German only docs. They buy it here in the USA, and then say, well
German dosc are OK, just go out and buy an AES/VDI programming book.
Well good luck trying!! My Austin bookstores haven't carried ANY ST
books since I moved here last Winter.
So, Atari Corp has failed once more. In fact the only ST book still in
print is Clayton Walthum's excellent book. But it is just a reprint
of his outdate "ST Log" magazine articles of 4 years ago. Another
example of the recent up-to-date techincal resources available to
the ST programmer.
Aghh, it is so disgusting!!
The ST could have been soooo goooooddddd!!

Since I -- as other people on this newsgroup --
could not figure out how to run OXYD, OXYD2 or SPACOLA
on my ST 1040, I phoned the author Meinolf Schneider, and got the
following information, which may be of interest to others, too:
These games do not run on TOS-versions of countries, where the
distribution of his books is not yet settled, like UK and France.
If you have 2 Meg and boot a German disk-TOS, you can run them.
greetings, RW

About a week ago, somebody (sorry, I don't recall the name)
mentioned that he was trying to post a demo of a windowing system
he had written. Does anyone know if he was successful? Has anyone
taken a look at it?
